Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Micropaleontology Sorter. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with a keen eye, patience, and an interest in geological and environmental sciences, particularly through microscopic analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for the meticulous sorting and picking of microfossils from geological samples, contributing vital data to environmental assessments and research projects. This role requires extensive use of a microscope and adherence to precise laboratory protocols. Full training will be provided to the right candidate who demonstrates a strong aptitude for precision work.
Key Responsibilities
- Meticulously sort and pick microfossils (e.g., foraminifera, ostracods, nannofossils) from sediment samples using a stereo microscope and fine instruments.
- Prepare samples for analysis, including washing, drying, and sieving according to established protocols.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of sorted samples, including sample identification, date, and progress.
- Organize and label picked microfossils into designated slides or trays.
- Perform basic microscope maintenance and ensure a clean and organized workstation.
- Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental guidelines and laboratory procedures.
- Collaborate with senior paleontologists and geologists to ensure data quality and project timelines are met.
- Assist with general laboratory duties as required.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and patience for repetitive tasks.
- Ability to maintain focus for extended periods while working with a microscope.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field (or currently pursuing).
- Previous experience working with microscopes in a laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with geological sample preparation techniques.
- An understanding of basic paleontological concepts or an interest in microfossils.
