Job Description

Join SWCA Environmental Consultants as a Desert Paleontology Monitor, supporting critical infrastructure and development projects across Utah and Nevada. This contract position involves fieldwork, where you will be responsible for identifying, documenting, and protecting paleontological resources in compliance with state and federal regulations. This role requires extensive travel to remote desert locations and the ability to work independently in challenging environments. We are seeking dedicated individuals with a strong understanding of paleontological principles and a commitment to meticulous data collection and reporting. While based out of our Albuquerque office, this role is primarily field-based within UT/NV, requiring periods of travel and living near project sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily paleontological monitoring during ground-disturbing activities on project sites in Utah and Nevada.
  • Identify, recover, and document paleontological resources, including fossil remains and geological formations.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all findings.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, construction crews, and regulatory agencies regarding paleontological issues.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local paleontological resource protection laws and regulations.
  • Prepare preliminary field reports and contribute to final technical reports as required.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and company policies in all field operations.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Cenozoic and Mesozoic stratigraphy and paleontology of the Western United States.
  • Proven ability to identify vertebrate and invertebrate fossils in a field setting.
  • Experience with GPS units and field data collection technologies.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in remote, rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience as a paleontological monitor on infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, BLM, USFS guidelines).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
