Job Description
Join the United States Forest Service as a Paleontology Technician and embark on an exciting outdoor career path dedicated to the preservation and study of ancient life forms. You will work primarily in the field, conducting surveys, excavating fossils, and assisting with site protection. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys to identify potential paleontological resource areas across diverse terrains.
- Assist in the excavation, documentation, and collection of fossil specimens following established protocols.
- Prepare and stabilize collected fossils for transport and curation.
- Maintain detailed field notes, maps, and photographic records of all activities and discoveries.
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS devices, cameras, and excavation tools.
- Contribute to the protection and monitoring of known paleontological sites to prevent damage or unauthorized collection.
- Assist in data entry and basic laboratory preparation of specimens under supervision.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and environmental guidelines while working in remote and challenging conditions.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and occasionally with the public regarding project activities.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions and rough terrain.
- Basic knowledge of geology, paleontology, or archaeology principles.
- Proficiency in using GPS devices and basic mapping skills.
- Strong attention to detail for documentation and record-keeping.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or coursework in geology, biology, archaeology, or a related field.
- Previous experience with outdoor fieldwork, particularly in remote or wilderness settings.
- Experience with fossil excavation and preparation techniques.
- Familiarity with federal land management agencies and their mission.
- Wilderness First Aid or other relevant outdoor safety certifications.
