Job Description

You will work primarily in the field, conducting surveys, excavating fossils, and assisting with site protection. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to identify potential paleontological resource areas across diverse terrains.
  • Assist in the excavation, documentation, and collection of fossil specimens following established protocols.
  • Prepare and stabilize collected fossils for transport and curation.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, maps, and photographic records of all activities and discoveries.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS devices, cameras, and excavation tools.
  • Contribute to the protection and monitoring of known paleontological sites to prevent damage or unauthorized collection.
  • Assist in data entry and basic laboratory preparation of specimens under supervision.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and environmental guidelines while working in remote and challenging conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and occasionally with the public regarding project activities.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions and rough terrain.
  • Basic knowledge of geology, paleontology, or archaeology principles.
  • Proficiency in using GPS devices and basic mapping skills.
  • Strong attention to detail for documentation and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or coursework in geology, biology, archaeology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience with outdoor fieldwork, particularly in remote or wilderness settings.
  • Experience with fossil excavation and preparation techniques.
  • Familiarity with federal land management agencies and their mission.
  • Wilderness First Aid or other relevant outdoor safety certifications.
