Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Invertebrate Paleontology Assistant to join our research team in a lab-based capacity. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about fossil discovery and preparation, eager to contribute to significant paleontological research. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of lead paleontologists and laboratory managers, primarily focusing on the processing, documentation, and curation of invertebrate fossil specimens. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, a steady hand, and an interest in learning advanced laboratory techniques used in paleontological studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare fossil specimens for study using various mechanical and chemical methods, including cleaning, sorting, and basic repair.
- Catalog and document fossil specimens accurately, including recording locality data, stratigraphic information, and taxonomic identifications.
- Maintain detailed digital and physical records of all specimens and associated data.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including microscopes, cameras, and basic rock preparation tools.
- Assist with the organization and curation of the invertebrate fossil collection.
- Perform basic data entry and database management for specimen information.
- Participate in laboratory safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Support research activities by assisting with photography, imaging, and literature searches as needed.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or biology.
- Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work meticulously.
- Basic computer proficiency, including data entry.
