Job Description

Are you passionate about music and making a profound difference in the lives of children? The Salinas City Elementary School District is seeking a dedicated Special Education Music Aide to join our team. In this meaningful role, you will assist certificated staff in providing music education and therapeutic support to students with diverse learning needs. This position offers paid training, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals eager to start a career in special education and music therapy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist special education teachers and music specialists in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) related to music and sensory development.
  • Support students during music activities, adapting instruments and materials as needed to ensure full participation and engagement.
  • Help students develop musical skills, rhythm, and appreciation in a supportive and encouraging environment.
  • Facilitate communication and social interaction among students during group music sessions.
  • Monitor student progress and behavior, providing feedback to certificated staff.
  • Prepare and organize music materials, instruments, and the learning environment.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times, including during transitions and activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents to support student goals and progress.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support as directed by the lead teacher.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding and appreciation of music principles or ability to play a simple instrument (e.g., ukulele, recorder).
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to work with children with special needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the varied needs of students.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and assist students with mobility as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of various adaptive techniques for music instruction.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Basic understanding of child development and learning principles.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency is a plus.
