Job Description
Join the Florida Department of Corrections as a Trainee Correctional Officer / Prison Guard. Key Responsibilities
- Participate in and successfully complete all required training programs, including physical fitness, self-defense, and correctional procedures.
- Learn to supervise and monitor inmate activities to prevent disturbances, escapes, and other unauthorized acts.
- Assist in maintaining a secure environment by conducting searches, inspections, and monitoring surveillance equipment.
- Develop skills in enforcing rules, regulations, and institutional policies consistently and fairly.
- Practice responding to emergencies, including altercations, medical incidents, and natural disasters, as part of a team.
- Learn to conduct inmate counts, security checks, and escorts.
- Assist in preparing accurate reports and documentation of daily activities and incidents.
- Develop effective communication skills for interacting with inmates, staff, and visitors.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
- United States Citizenship.
- Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
- Strong ethical character and integrity.
- Ability to learn and adhere to strict rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity for sound judgment and quick decision-making under pressure.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of a correctional officer, including standing for long periods, walking, lifting, and restraining individuals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field.
- Prior military service or experience in a security-related role.
- Experience in customer service or any role requiring conflict resolution.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
