Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Senior Music Companion with a strong healthcare focus to join our dedicated team. This rewarding role involves utilizing the power of music to enhance the well-being, mood, and cognitive function of our patients in various healthcare settings. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of therapeutic music applications, excellent interpersonal skills, and a profound commitment to patient care. You will be instrumental in creating personalized musical experiences, leading group sessions, and collaborating with medical staff to integrate music into care plans. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a significant positive impact on the lives of individuals undergoing medical treatment or rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement individualized and group music programs for patients, considering their medical conditions, preferences, and therapeutic goals.
- Provide one-on-one music companionship, including singing, playing instruments, or facilitating listening sessions, to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and stimulate cognitive engagement.
- Collaborate with nurses, doctors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to integrate music therapy principles into comprehensive care plans.
- Assess patient responses to music interventions and document observations accurately in patient records.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and engaging environment for music activities, ensuring all equipment is in good working order.
- Mentor junior music companions and volunteers, sharing best practices and supporting their professional development.
- Stay informed on current best practices and research in music and health to continually enhance program effectiveness.
- Act as an advocate for the benefits of music in healthcare within the organization and the wider community.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in playing at least one musical instrument (e.g., guitar, piano, ukulele).
- Strong vocal abilities and an extensive repertoire of diverse musical genres.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills, with the ability to connect empathetically with patients.
- Understanding of patient privacy regulations (HIPAA) and ethical considerations in healthcare.
- Ability to adapt music interventions to suit varying patient needs, cognitive levels, and physical limitations.
- Proficiency in creating and documenting care plans and patient notes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy, Music Performance, or a related field.
- Certification from the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting (hospitals, long-term care, hospice).
- Knowledge of various music therapy techniques and modalities.
- Experience leading group activities and workshops.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus.
