Job Description

As an Orthopedic Cast Room Technician (Trainee) at Atrium Health, you will embark on a rewarding career path assisting orthopedic specialists in the application and removal of casts, splints, and other orthopedic devices. This hands-on training position is designed for individuals eager to learn and develop essential clinical skills in a dynamic healthcare setting. You will work closely with experienced technicians and medical professionals, gaining practical experience in patient care, material preparation, and maintaining a sterile environment. This role is crucial in supporting our orthopedic department and ensuring patient comfort and recovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and master the techniques for applying and removing various types of casts and splints under direct supervision.
  • Prepare casting and splinting materials, ensuring all necessary supplies are ready and sterilized.
  • Assist orthopedic physicians and advanced practice providers during procedures.
  • Educate patients and their families on cast care instructions and signs of complications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked cast room environment.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and hospital policies.
  • Document patient interactions and procedures accurately in electronic health records.
  • Attend all required training sessions and complete competency assessments.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Strong desire to learn and grow within the orthopedic field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a team
  • Demonstrated empathy and compassion towards patients
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting (volunteer, shadowing, or entry-level roles)
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
