Job Description

VCA Animal Hospitals is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team in Overland Park. This is an entry-level position focused on animal care, and comprehensive training will be provided to ensure your success. You will play a crucial role in supporting our veterinary staff, ensuring the comfort and well-being of our animal patients, and maintaining a clean and safe environment within our clinic. Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, ensuring their comfort.
- Monitor and care for hospitalized patients, including feeding, walking, and administering medications as directed.
- Clean and sanitize exam rooms, surgical areas, kennels, and other hospital facilities.
- Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
- Maintain accurate patient records and assist with inventory management.
- Provide compassionate customer service to pet owners, answering questions and relaying information.
- Perform basic laboratory tasks, such as preparing samples for analysis.
- Assist with radiograph positioning and development.
- Ensure all safety protocols and animal care standards are met at all times.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Genuine passion for animal welfare and a strong desire to learn.
- Ability to lift and restrain animals of various sizes (up to 50 lbs unassisted).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work as part of a team.
- Empathy, patience, and a positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with animals (e.g., pet owner, volunteer at a shelter, pet sitter).
- Basic knowledge of animal behavior and common breeds.
- Customer service experience.
