Job Description

Are you passionate about mechanics and looking for a hands-on career starting point? Royal Mail is offering an exciting Trainee Postal Fleet Mechanic Apprenticeship in Whitby. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience and qualifications while working with a dedicated team maintaining our vital postal fleet. You will learn to diagnose, repair, and maintain a diverse range of vehicles, from vans to trucks, under the guidance of experienced technicians. This apprenticeship combines practical work experience with formal training, leading to a recognised qualification and a rewarding career path within a national institution. No prior experience is required, just a keen interest in vehicles and a strong desire to learn.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist qualified technicians with routine maintenance and repairs on postal vehicles.
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using modern diagnostic equipment.
  • Carry out vehicle inspections and prepare vehicles for MOT tests.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks to ensure fleet reliability.
  • Maintain a clean and organised workshop environment.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies.
  • Complete all required coursework and practical assessments for the apprenticeship programme.
  • Develop proficiency in using various tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities.

Required Skills

  • A genuine interest in vehicle mechanics and engineering.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Full UK driving license (or working towards one) is highly beneficial.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Maths, and a Science/Technical subject (Grades 4-9/A*-C).
  • Previous experience with hands-on tasks or hobbies related to mechanics.
  • Basic IT skills for using diagnostic software.
