Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Archaeologist / Heritage Manager to join our dynamic team in Waukegan, Illinois. This is a unique opportunity for a dedicated professional looking to advance their career in cultural resource management within a leading global firm. The role involves overseeing archaeological investigations, managing heritage projects, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This position requires a strong understanding of archaeological methodologies, project management skills, and a commitment to ethical heritage stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage archaeological field investigations, including surveys, testing, and data recovery efforts.
  • Conduct archival research, artifact analysis, and prepare comprehensive technical reports.
  • Ensure project compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA, NEPA, and other relevant cultural heritage legislation.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and scopes of work.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders.
  • Provide expert advice on cultural heritage issues during project planning and implementation.
  • Mentor junior staff and promote best practices in archaeology and heritage management.
  • Contribute to business development activities, including proposal writing and client engagement.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in cultural resource management (CRM).
  • Demonstrated experience as a Field Director or Project Manager for archaeological investigations.
  • Proficiency in archaeological field methods, laboratory analysis, and report writing.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state cultural resource laws and regulations (e.g., NHPA, NEPA).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork as required.
  • Eligible for R-Trained or higher certification per relevant state standards (e.g., Illinois Historic Preservation Agency).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and data management.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and tribal cultural resource departments.
  • Professional Archaeological certification (e.g., RPA).
  • Experience in the Great Lakes region or Midwest archaeology.
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management training.
