Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and dedicated Digital Archivist to join our remote team, focusing specifically on historical data. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for digitizing, organizing, preserving, and ensuring the accessibility of valuable historical records and media. This position requires a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of archival principles, and proficiency with digital tools and metadata standards. As a fully remote position, you will manage your workflow independently while collaborating virtually with a team dedicated to historical preservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Digitize historical documents, photographs, audio, and video materials using specialized equipment and software.
  • Create and manage metadata according to established archival standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS) to ensure discoverability and long-term preservation.
  • Implement digital preservation strategies, including file format migration, data backup, and integrity checks.
  • Organize and maintain digital asset management systems, ensuring logical structure and accessibility for authorized users.
  • Research and apply best practices for the handling and preservation of various types of historical data.
  • Collaborate with historians, researchers, and internal stakeholders to understand content needs and optimize data access.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to digital file corruption, data loss, or format obsolescence.
  • Document archival processes, policies, and workflows clearly and comprehensively.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in digital imaging, scanning, and media conversion software.
  • Strong understanding of metadata standards and controlled vocabularies.
  • Experience with Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems or archival management software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a remote environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with historical research methodologies and primary source analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, History, Information Science, or a related field.
  • 1+ years of experience in digital archiving, records management, or library sciences.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) for data processing or automation.
  • Experience with specific preservation software (e.g., Archivematica, Preservica).
  • Certification in digital archiving or records management.
