Job Description

The City of Houston Public Works is seeking a dedicated and reliable Street Sweeper Operator to join our environmental services team. This stable, full-time position is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of our city’s streets, contributing directly to public health and safety. The successful candidate will operate street sweeping equipment to remove debris, litter, and other waste from designated routes within the city, primarily focusing on local council areas. This role requires adherence to strict safety protocols, regular equipment maintenance, and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweeping vehicles safely and efficiently along assigned routes.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of sweeping equipment, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
  • Remove debris, litter, leaves, and other waste from city streets, gutters, and public areas.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of activities, routes completed, and materials collected.
  • Conduct minor routine maintenance and cleaning of the street sweeper.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational issues or public concerns.
  • Assist with other public works tasks as needed, including special event cleanups or emergency responses.

Required Skills

  • Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
  • Proven experience operating heavy equipment, preferably street sweepers.
  • Strong understanding of traffic laws and safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and standing.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment maintenance.
  • Excellent spatial awareness and attention to detail.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience working for a municipal public works department or similar environmental service.
  • Familiarity with Houston's street network and geographical areas.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations pertaining to waste collection and disposal.
