Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated and reliable Snow Plow Operators for the upcoming winter season. This is a critical, temporary position with emergency pay for operations during severe weather events. As a Snow Plow Operator, you will be responsible for clearing snow and ice from municipal roads, sidewalks, and public facilities to ensure the safety and accessibility of our community. This role requires flexibility, as shifts can vary based on weather conditions, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Prior experience operating heavy equipment in winter conditions is highly valued, but comprehensive training will be provided to qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate snow plows, salt spreaders, and other heavy equipment to clear snow and ice from city streets, parking lots, and designated public areas.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or maintenance needs.
  • Monitor weather conditions and respond promptly to snow and ice accumulation events, often on short notice.
  • Apply de-icing agents and abrasives safely and effectively according to established procedures.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and departmental policies while operating equipment and performing duties.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding road conditions and operational progress.
  • Perform manual snow removal tasks around obstacles, sidewalks, and entrances when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate logs of activities, equipment usage, and materials applied.
  • Represent the City of St. George Public Works with professionalism and a commitment to public service.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strong understanding of traffic laws and safety procedures.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in adverse weather conditions, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, on an on-call basis.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment adjustments and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a snow plow operator or in a similar winter maintenance role.
  • Experience operating front-end loaders, backhoes, or other municipal heavy equipment.
  • Familiarity with St. George roadways and geographical areas.
  • Certification in safety practices related to heavy equipment operation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
