Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Radiochemist with a strong focus on nuclear energy to join our team in Berkeley, California. This critical role involves conducting advanced radiochemical analyses, contributing to nuclear safety and waste management protocols, and supporting research initiatives aimed at optimizing nuclear operations. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe handling, analysis, and disposal of radioactive materials, adhering to stringent regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities
- Perform complex radiochemical analyses on samples from nuclear power plants, research facilities, and environmental sites.
- Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods and procedures for radioactive materials.
- Operate and maintain a variety of sophisticated radiochemical instrumentation, including alpha/beta counters, gamma spectrometers, and liquid scintillation counters.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local, state, federal, and company-specific safety regulations and quality assurance protocols.
- Contribute to the assessment and management of radioactive waste, ensuring safe storage and disposal.
- Participate in emergency response planning and execution related to radiological incidents.
- Provide expert consultation and technical support to various internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Document all analyses, findings, and procedures accurately and comprehensively for regulatory review and internal reporting.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and safety excellence.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Radiochemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a radiochemistry laboratory, preferably within the nuclear energy sector.
- Demonstrated expertise in gamma spectrometry, alpha/beta counting, and liquid scintillation analysis.
- Thorough understanding of nuclear physics, radiation detection principles, and radiochemical separation techniques.
- Proficiency in regulatory requirements related to radioactive materials (e.g., NRC, EPA, DOE).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-doctoral experience in nuclear forensics, environmental radiochemistry, or nuclear waste management.
- Experience with ICP-MS or other advanced analytical techniques for trace element analysis.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Professional certifications in radiation safety or hazardous materials handling.
- Proven track record of publishing research or presenting at scientific conferences.
