Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Paleontology Research Assistant to join our dynamic team within the Department of Integrative Biology. This role is integral to supporting ongoing research projects focused on fossil collection, preparation, and analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, contributing to both field and laboratory work. Key Responsibilities
- Assist faculty and researchers with the collection, documentation, and preservation of fossil specimens in both laboratory and field settings.
- Perform preliminary preparation and conservation of fossil materials using various tools and techniques.
- Maintain detailed records of specimen data, field notes, and laboratory procedures.
- Operate and maintain specialized paleontological equipment and instruments.
- Support data entry, analysis, and basic report generation for research projects.
- Assist with the organization and curation of departmental fossil collections.
- Participate in outreach activities and educational initiatives as needed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and university guidelines for research and fieldwork.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in fossil collection, preparation, or curation.
- Proficiency in data recording and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite, database entry).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with museum collections management systems.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping fossil localities.
- Basic knowledge of anatomical terminology for vertebrates or invertebrates.
- Valid driver's license and ability to participate in occasional fieldwork (driving university vehicles).
