Job Description

Join Rio Tinto, a global leader in mining and metals, as a Metallurgical Chemist with a focus on our vital mining and metal processing operations. We are offering a significant sign-on bonus to attract top talent to our Pasco, WA facility. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in analyzing materials, optimizing processes, and ensuring the quality and efficiency of our metallurgical operations. This is a full-time, on-site position where your expertise will directly contribute to our commitment to innovation and sustainable resource management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth chemical analysis of various samples, including ore, metal products, intermediate process solutions, and environmental samples, utilizing a range of advanced analytical techniques.
  • Develop, optimize, and implement metallurgical and chemical processes to enhance recovery, purity, and overall operational efficiency.
  • Operate, calibrate, and meticulously maintain state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation such as ICP-OES, XRF, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), and other specialized equipment.
  • Interpreting complex analytical data, identifying trends, troubleshooting process deviations, and generating comprehensive technical reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to all company safety protocols, environmental regulations, and quality control standards within the laboratory and plant environment.
  • Actively participating in research and development initiatives aimed at improving existing processes, exploring new technologies, and supporting product development.
  • Collaborating effectively with engineers, metallurgists, and operational teams to provide analytical support and contribute to problem-solving.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven experience working in a metallurgical or analytical chemistry laboratory, preferably within the mining or heavy industry sector.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation, specifically ICP-OES, XRF, and AAS.
  • Robust understanding of chemical and metallurgical principles, reaction kinetics, and material science.
  • Exceptional data analysis, interpretation, and technical report writing skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and environmental compliance regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Direct experience with process optimization, pilot plant operations, or industrial scale-up.
  • Familiarity with large-scale mining operations, mineral processing, or metal refining processes.
  • Certification in LEAN or Six Sigma methodologies.
