Job Description
Are you passionate about animals and looking to start a career in animal care? The Humane Society of Pasco County is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Kennel Hand (Trainee) to join our team in New Port Richey. This is an entry-level position, and we welcome applicants with no prior professional experience. You will receive comprehensive on-the-job training to become a vital part of our animal care operations, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the animals in our shelter. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitization of kennels, cages, and common animal areas to maintain a hygienic environment.
- Provide food and water to animals according to established feeding schedules and dietary requirements.
- Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any changes, concerns, or signs of illness to senior staff immediately.
- Assist with animal enrichment activities, including walks, playtime, and socialization, under supervision.
- Support the intake and outtake process for animals, ensuring proper documentation and handling.
- Laundry duties, including washing and folding bedding, towels, and other animal-related items.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of animal care supplies and equipment.
- Follow all safety protocols and humane handling techniques to ensure the well-being of both animals and staff.
- Learn and adhere to all shelter policies and procedures related to animal care and facility operations.
- Assist visitors and potential adopters with a positive and helpful attitude.
Required Skills
- Genuine love and compassion for animals.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Ability to work in an environment that may be noisy and include exposure to animal dander and waste.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new procedures and challenges.
- Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous volunteer experience with animals in a shelter, rescue, or veterinary setting (not required but a plus).
- Basic understanding of animal behavior and safety (will be trained).
