Job Description
Join the ACLU of North Carolina as a Junior Legislative Assistant with a focus on political science. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic and analytical individual to contribute to critical policy work that defends civil liberties and rights across North Carolina. This position offers a hybrid work model, allowing for flexibility while ensuring collaborative engagement with our team and legislative processes.
As a Junior Legislative Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our legislative advocacy efforts. You will be instrumental in conducting in-depth research, monitoring legislative developments, and preparing essential documents that inform our strategies and public education campaigns. Your work will directly contribute to our mission of protecting and advancing civil rights for all North Carolinians.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth research on legislative proposals, public policy issues, and legal precedents.
- Monitor legislative sessions, committee meetings, and relevant hearings at local and state levels.
- Prepare policy briefs, memos, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in drafting legislative language, amendments, and public statements.
- Support legislative advocacy efforts through constituent communication and stakeholder engagement.
- Track and analyze voting records, policy outcomes, and political trends.
- Coordinate meetings, events, and outreach initiatives with elected officials, staff, and community partners.
- Maintain accurate records and databases of legislative activities and research findings.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or a related field
- Demonstrated strong research and analytical skills, particularly in legislative contexts
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or coursework towards a Master's in Political Science or Public Administration
- Previous internship or volunteer experience in a legislative office, advocacy group, or political campaign
- Familiarity with North Carolina state politics and legislative processes
- Experience with legislative tracking software or databases
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish) is a plus
