Job Description

Join Kier Group as a Highway Maintenance Operative (Government) in Birkenhead, Wirral, and play a crucial role in maintaining and improving the local road network. This is an exciting opportunity for dedicated individuals to contribute to essential public services with premium pay. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks crucial to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our roads, working as part of a dynamic and supportive team dedicated to excellence in infrastructure. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute routine and reactive maintenance tasks on highways, including pothole repairs, patching, and resurfacing.
  • Perform drainage clearance and repair to prevent flooding and ensure efficient water management.
  • Install and maintain road signs, barriers, and other street furniture.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs, including accident clear-up and winter maintenance (gritting and snow clearance).
  • Operate a variety of plant, tools, and machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Implement traffic management systems, including setting up cones, signs, and temporary diversions, adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including daily work records and incident reports.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and report to the site supervisor.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Full UK Driving Licence (category B minimum)
  • Demonstrable experience in civil engineering, groundworks, or a similar outdoor manual role.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety principles in a construction/highway environment.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Physically fit and capable of undertaking demanding manual labour.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) Operative or Supervisor qualification.
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • HGV/LGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle/Large Goods Vehicle) Licence.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Highway Maintenance or a related discipline.
  • Experience operating specialist highway plant and machinery.
