Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Graduate Paleontology Assistant to join our team in Irvine, CA. This entry-level position is designed for recent graduates passionate about paleontology and environmental consulting, offering a structured path to transition into a professional paleontologist role. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in all phases of paleontological resource management, including field surveys, fossil recovery, laboratory preparation, data management, and technical report writing. This role emphasizes mentorship and professional development, providing the foundational skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological field surveys, monitoring, and excavation in accordance with project scopes and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, recover, and document fossil specimens in the field, ensuring proper collection and curation protocols are followed.
  • Perform laboratory preparation, cleaning, and conservation of fossil materials.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed field notes, photographs, and digital data records.
  • Assist with data entry, analysis, and management for various paleontological projects.
  • Support senior paleontologists in the preparation of technical reports, including literature reviews and data synthesis.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations during field and lab activities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Anthropology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of paleontological principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to perform strenuous fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail for fossil identification and documentation.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology or related field.
  • Previous experience with paleontological fieldwork or laboratory work (academic or professional).
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Experience with scientific report writing and literature research.
  • Valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record.
