Job Description
We are seeking a highly specialized and compassionate Forensic Nurse Examiner with a strong focus on legal support to join our dedicated team. This role involves providing expert forensic nursing care to victims of violence, abuse, and trauma, meticulously documenting findings, and serving as a critical resource for legal proceedings. The successful candidate will utilize their specialized training to conduct comprehensive forensic examinations, collect evidence, and offer expert testimony when required, all while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and ethical practice. This is an on-site position requiring direct patient interaction and collaboration with various legal and community agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive forensic examinations for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and other forms of interpersonal violence.
- Collect, document, and preserve forensic evidence in accordance with established protocols and legal standards.
- Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and referrals to appropriate community resources for patients and their families.
- Prepare detailed and objective forensic reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and legal defensibility.
- Collaborate effectively with law enforcement, legal professionals, social services, and other healthcare providers.
- Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings as required, articulating complex medical findings clearly and concisely.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adhere to all ethical and professional standards.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and specialized training to stay current with best practices in forensic nursing.
- Educate healthcare staff and community members on forensic nursing principles and trauma-informed care.
Required Skills
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Completion of a recognized Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) training program or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in emergency, critical care, or obstetrics/gynecology
- Demonstrated expertise in forensic evidence collection and documentation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and testimony
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Compassion and sensitivity when working with vulnerable populations
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related advanced degree
- Certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) and/or Pediatric (SANE-P)
- Experience in providing expert witness testimony
- Familiarity with local legal systems and community resources in Contra Costa County
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish, Tagalog)
