Job Description
FedEx is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Heavy Haul Specialist to manage and execute the transportation of oversize and overweight loads. This critical role involves meticulous planning, coordination, and execution of complex logistics, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and safety standards. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in heavy haul operations, a deep understanding of permitting, route surveys, and specialized equipment. You will be instrumental in expanding our capabilities for handling the most challenging freight, contributing directly to our reputation for reliability and expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute the safe and efficient transportation of oversize and overweight loads, including route surveys and risk assessments.
- Obtain necessary permits, escorts, and notifications for all heavy haul operations, ensuring strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Operate specialized heavy haul equipment, including multi-axle trailers, lowboys, and extendable trailers.
- Coordinate with dispatch, customers, and internal teams to provide timely updates and ensure seamless project execution.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, maintain accurate logs, and complete all required documentation.
- Manage and oversee load securement procedures for complex and non-standard cargo.
- Identify and mitigate potential hazards and challenges during transit.
- Provide expert guidance on heavy haul capabilities and logistics solutions to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, promoting a culture of safety.
- Stay current with industry best practices, equipment advancements, and regulatory changes in heavy haul transport.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of verifiable experience in heavy haul and oversize load transportation.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
- Extensive knowledge of DOT regulations, permitting processes, and state-specific oversize/overweight laws.
- Proficiency in operating various heavy haul equipment (e.g., lowboys, extendable trailers).
- Strong understanding of load securement techniques for specialized cargo.
- Ability to read and interpret route surveys, maps, and schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to unforeseen challenges.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for coordinating with various stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specialized rigging and lifting operations.
- Certifications in heavy equipment operation or advanced safety training.
- Familiarity with digital logging devices (ELDs) and transportation management systems (TMS).
- Associate’s degree or higher in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field.
