Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly skilled High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This part-time position offers top rates for an individual passionate about jazz education and dedicated to inspiring high school students. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the high school jazz ensemble, preparing them for performances, and fostering a deep appreciation for jazz music and improvisation. This role requires exceptional musicianship, strong leadership skills, and the ability to connect with and motivate students of varying skill levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct engaging evening rehearsals for the high school jazz band.
  • Select appropriate repertoire that challenges students and showcases their talents.
  • Teach jazz theory, improvisation techniques, and stylistic nuances.
  • Prepare the ensemble for various performances, including school concerts, community events, and competitions.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to enhance their individual and collective performance.
  • Manage instrument inventory and ensure proper care of school-owned equipment.
  • Collaborate with other music educators within the district to coordinate performances and events.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages creativity and collaboration.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in a lead jazz instrument (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass, drums).
  • Extensive knowledge of jazz history, theory, and improvisation.
  • Proven experience in conducting and directing instrumental ensembles, preferably jazz bands.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with high school-aged students.
  • Ability to read and arrange musical scores for jazz ensembles.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
  • Prior experience teaching or directing a high school jazz band.
  • Familiarity with the Pennsylvania music education standards.
  • Experience with music technology and recording for educational purposes.
