Job Description

We are seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Music. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of music education, scholarship, and performance at one of the world’s leading public universities. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic planning for the Department of Music.
  • Oversee academic programs, curriculum development, and faculty appointments.
  • Manage departmental budget, resources, and facilities effectively.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Represent the department within the university and to external constituencies.
  • Mentor junior faculty and support professional development initiatives.
  • Lead fundraising efforts and external partnerships to advance departmental goals.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and academic standards.

Required Skills

  • Doctorate in Music, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Composition, or a related field.
  • Distinguished record of scholarship, creative work, or performance suitable for a tenured faculty appointment at UC Berkeley.
  • Proven administrative and leadership experience within a university or similar institutional setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong financial management and budgetary oversight abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience chairing a university department or equivalent leadership role.
  • Successful track record in fundraising and donor relations.
