Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and meticulous Medical Specimen Handler to join our pathology team in Slough. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the accurate and efficient handling of medical specimens, ensuring their integrity from receipt to processing. Your work directly contributes to timely and accurate patient diagnoses, making attention to detail and adherence to strict protocols paramount. This is an on-site position requiring a commitment to safety and precision.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, sort, and log a wide variety of medical specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) upon arrival.
- Verify patient information and specimen details against accompanying documentation to ensure accuracy.
- Label specimens correctly and prepare them for analysis or storage according to laboratory protocols.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment used for specimen processing, such as centrifuges.
- Perform data entry accurately into laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Monitor specimen storage conditions and ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
- Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, including COSHH guidelines and infection control policies.
- Communicate effectively with clinical and laboratory staff regarding specimen inquiries or discrepancies.
- Assist with inventory management of laboratory supplies.
- Participate in ongoing training and quality assurance programs.
