Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and physically capable Macro-Paleontology Lab Assistant to join our team, focusing specifically on large specimen handling and preparation. This role is crucial for the successful processing, conservation, and study of significant fossil finds. You will work under the supervision of senior paleontologists and lab managers, contributing directly to the museum’s research and collection goals. This is an on-site position requiring meticulous attention to detail and adherence to strict safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport, handle, and manipulate large fossil specimens using specialized equipment (e.g., hoists, forklifts, dollies).
  • Assist in the mechanical preparation of large specimens, including jacket removal, matrix reduction, and fossil consolidation, using various tools.
  • Perform basic conservation tasks, such as cleaning, repairing, and stabilizing fragile large fossils.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimen data, preparation progress, and conservation treatments in physical and digital databases.
  • Organize and manage lab supplies, equipment, and specimen storage areas to ensure efficiency and safety.
  • Assist with the setup and calibration of lab equipment specific to large specimen work.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols for working with hazardous materials and heavy equipment.
  • Collaborate effectively with paleontologists, researchers, and other lab personnel on ongoing projects.
  • Contribute to the general cleanliness and orderliness of the paleontology lab facilities.

Required Skills

  • Proven physical strength and stamina for lifting, carrying, and manipulating heavy objects.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise work.
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and safety procedures meticulously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with large specimens or in a physically demanding lab/field environment.

  • Familiarity with basic fossil preparation techniques and tools.
  • Experience with database management or museum collection software.
  • Forklift certification or experience operating similar heavy equipment.
