Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Garden Fence Stainer with a strong focus on wood protection to join our growing team. This unique role combines remote administrative and client management tasks with hands-on, on-site staining work at various client locations. The ideal candidate will be passionate about preserving and enhancing exterior wood structures, possessing expertise in selecting and applying the best stains and protective coatings. You will manage your schedule, client communications, and material ordering from your home office, while physically traveling to client properties to execute high-quality staining projects. This role demands a high degree of autonomy, excellent time management, and a commitment to delivering exceptional results that reflect Sherwin-Williams’ standards of quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct virtual or in-person consultations with clients to assess project needs, recommend appropriate wood stains and protective products, and provide accurate estimates.
  • Manage project schedules, material procurement, and client communications from a remote home office setting.
  • Prepare garden fences and other exterior wood structures for staining, including cleaning, sanding, and minor repairs.
  • Apply wood stains and protective coatings using various techniques (brush, roller, sprayer) to ensure even coverage, proper penetration, and a professional finish.
  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols and environmental guidelines, ensuring responsible disposal of materials.
  • Monitor weather conditions and adjust work schedules to ensure optimal application and drying conditions for stains and coatings.
  • Maintain and clean tools and equipment regularly to ensure their longevity and optimal performance.
  • Provide post-service care instructions and recommendations to clients for ongoing wood maintenance.
  • Document project progress, material usage, and complete job reports accurately and timely.
  • Stay updated on new products, techniques, and industry best practices in wood protection and staining.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in wood staining and protective coating application (minimum 2 years).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of different wood types, stains, sealants, and their appropriate applications for various outdoor conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client interaction and remote coordination.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills for scheduling, email, and reporting.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to client sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in painting or protective coatings.
  • Experience with Sherwin-Williams or similar high-quality paint and stain products.
  • Previous experience in a role requiring remote management of field-based work.
  • Customer service experience with a focus on client satisfaction.
  • Familiarity with local building codes and environmental regulations related to exterior finishes.
