Job Description
Are you passionate about animals and eager to start a career in animal care? The Nebraska Humane Society is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Kennel Hand Trainee to join our team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with no prior professional experience in animal care but who possess a strong work ethic, a love for animals, and a desire to learn. You will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of kennel operations, animal handling, and welfare. This is a vital role in ensuring the comfort, safety, and well-being of the animals in our care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily cleaning and sanitization of kennels, cages, and common areas to maintain a hygienic environment.
- Provide food and water to animals according to established feeding schedules and dietary requirements.
- Monitor animals for any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and report observations to senior staff.
- Assist with the safe and humane handling and restraint of animals, under supervision.
- Learn and practice proper animal enrichment activities to promote physical and mental well-being.
- Wash and disinfect animal bedding, bowls, and toys.
- Stock and organize supplies in kennels and storage areas.
- Assist with basic grooming tasks, such as brushing and bathing, as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of animal feeding, cleaning, and general condition.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure the well-being of animals, staff, and volunteers.
Required Skills
- Genuine love for animals and a strong desire to work with them.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to animal welfare and humane treatment.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous volunteer experience with animals in a shelter or rescue setting is a plus, but not required.
- Basic understanding of animal behavior is a plus.
