Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and innovative Principal Medicinal Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team. This pivotal role will be instrumental in leading drug discovery projects from hit identification through lead optimization, contributing significantly to our multi-national biotech initiatives. The successful candidate will apply deep expertise in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry to design, synthesize, and evaluate novel small molecules aimed at critical therapeutic targets. You will be expected to drive scientific strategy, mentor junior colleagues, and collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams including biology, pharmacology, DMPK, and structural biology, both locally and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead medicinal chemistry efforts on drug discovery programs, setting strategic direction and tactical execution.
- Design and synthesize novel small molecules with desired pharmacological profiles, optimizing for potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetics, and safety.
- Analyze complex SAR data and structural biology information to inform design strategies and hypothesis generation.
- Contribute to target validation and hit identification strategies.
- Manage external CRO relationships and oversee outsourced chemistry activities.
- Present research findings effectively to project teams, senior management, and scientific conferences.
- Mentor and guide junior medicinal chemists, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and collaboration.
- Stay abreast of scientific literature and emerging technologies in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory guidelines.
Required Skills
- PhD in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with at least 10 years of post-PhD experience in pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
- Demonstrated track record of scientific leadership and significant contributions to drug discovery programs (e.g., patent inventorship, publications, INDs).
- Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanism, and modern synthetic methods.
- Profound understanding of medicinal chemistry principles, including structure-activity relationships (SAR), ADME, and drug design strategies.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in interpreting complex data sets (NMR, MS, HPLC, biological assays).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, and global team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with computational chemistry tools and techniques (e.g., molecular modeling, docking) for drug design.
- Proven ability to lead projects to key decision points or milestones.
- Prior experience working in a multi-national research setting or collaborating with international teams.
- Experience with various therapeutic areas, particularly immunology, oncology, or neuroscience.
