Job Description
Novartis is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Medicinal Chemist Associate to join our dynamic Drug Discovery team. In this role, you will contribute significantly to the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel small molecules for various therapeutic targets. Key Responsibilities
- Execute multi-step organic synthesis to prepare target compounds for biological evaluation.
- Purify and characterize synthesized compounds using standard analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC).
- Analyze and interpret biological data to inform structure-activity relationships (SAR) and guide compound design.
- Maintain accurate electronic lab notebooks and contribute to project reports and presentations.
- Collaborate effectively with biochemists, biologists, and computational chemists within project teams.
- Stay updated on current literature and new technologies in medicinal chemistry.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment.
Required Skills
- Strong foundation in synthetic organic chemistry, including reaction mechanisms and retrosynthesis.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques for organic synthesis and compound purification.
- Experience with analytical instrumentation such as NMR, MS, and HPLC.
- Ability to interpret complex spectroscopic data.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
- Prior industry experience in a drug discovery setting.
- Familiarity with cheminformatics tools and database searching.
- Experience with parallel synthesis or automated chemistry platforms.
- Understanding of ADME properties and their relevance to drug discovery.
