Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse (PICU) to join our critical care team in Red Deer, Alberta. This is a unique opportunity for internationally trained nurses, as we offer visa sponsorship for eligible candidates. As a PICU Nurse, you will provide specialized nursing care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents, utilizing advanced assessment skills and sophisticated medical technology. You will work within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, and family-centered support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and comprehensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care plans.
  • Monitor vital signs, interpret lab results, and administer medications, including complex intravenous therapies, safely and accurately.
  • Operate and manage specialized medical equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, and IV pumps.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, respiratory therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
  • Educate and support patient families, providing clear communication regarding their child's condition and treatment plan.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, ensuring compliance with AHS policies and professional standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, demonstrating strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Required Skills

  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or eligibility to register.
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent experience in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) or a high-acuity pediatric critical care setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in critical care assessments, interventions, and emergency response.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Strong commitment to patient and family-centered care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Specialty certification in Pediatric Critical Care Nursing (e.g., CPCCN).
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems specific to Alberta Health Services.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
