Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Metallurgical Chemist to join our R&D team in Boulder, CO. This pivotal role will focus on advanced materials research and development with a strong emphasis on applications within the mining and metal industries. The successful candidate will be instrumental in analyzing and characterizing metallic materials, optimizing metallurgical processes, and contributing to the development of innovative solutions for our clients. This is an on-site position offering a significant sign-on bonus for qualified candidates ready to make an immediate impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive chemical and metallurgical analyses of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products related to mining and metal applications.
- Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods and procedures for material characterization using various instruments (e.g., ICP-OES, XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, OES).
- Interpret complex analytical data to identify material properties, composition, and microstructural characteristics.
- Support process optimization efforts by providing metallurgical insights and recommendations to improve yield, quality, and efficiency in metal extraction and processing.
- Perform failure analysis on metallic components and provide root cause investigation reports.
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists across different disciplines to develop new materials and improve existing products.
- Maintain meticulous laboratory records, prepare detailed technical reports, and present findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, quality standards (e.g., ISO 17025), and environmental regulations within the laboratory.
- Operate and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment, performing calibration and troubleshooting as necessary.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a metallurgical or analytical chemistry laboratory, preferably with exposure to mining or heavy industry.
- Proficiency with analytical techniques such as ICP-OES, XRF, XRD, OES, and wet chemical analysis.
- Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, including phase transformations, corrosion, mechanical properties, and material failure mechanisms.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze complex data, troubleshoot issues, and propose effective solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced R&D environment.
- Commitment to laboratory safety and quality assurance practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Chemistry.
- Experience with advanced microscopy techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM) and image analysis software.
- Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DOE).
- Experience in an ISO-certified laboratory environment.
- Prior experience working directly with mining or metal processing clients.
