Job Description
Join CenterPoint Energy as a Public Utilities Meter Reader, an essential role within our operations team. This position offers significant independence and the opportunity to work outdoors daily, contributing directly to the accurate billing and service delivery for our customers. You will be responsible for accurately reading electric and gas meters across various residential and commercial properties within assigned routes in the Houston area. This role requires excellent time management, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate diverse environments in varying weather conditions. While primarily an independent role, you will be part of a supportive team committed to safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately read electric and gas meters on assigned routes using handheld electronic devices.
- Record meter readings and input data into the company's system efficiently and precisely.
- Safely operate a company vehicle to travel between meter locations.
- Identify and report any hazardous conditions, damaged meters, or suspicious activities encountered on routes.
- Interact professionally and courteously with customers when necessary.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of service areas and reading procedures.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and company policies.
- Manage time effectively to complete daily routes within established schedules.
- Perform light maintenance on company-issued equipment as needed.
Required Skills
- Valid state driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to walk long distances and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to use handheld electronic devices and basic computer skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills for internal reporting and customer interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in a role requiring outdoor work or route-based activities.
- Familiarity with the Houston metropolitan area and its surrounding districts.
