Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Think Tank Librarian with a strong focus on Information Management to join our esteemed research team. This critical role involves overseeing the acquisition, organization, and dissemination of information resources vital to our policy research initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in library science principles, information architecture, and modern data management techniques, enabling our researchers to efficiently access and utilize high-quality information. You will be instrumental in developing and maintaining robust information systems, supporting complex research projects, and ensuring the integrity and accessibility of our extensive knowledge base.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and curate diverse information resources, including academic journals, policy briefs, datasets, and proprietary research materials.
  • Develop and implement effective information architecture, classification schemes, and metadata standards to optimize resource discovery.
  • Provide expert research support to analysts and project teams, conducting advanced literature searches and data retrieval.
  • Oversee the lifecycle management of digital and physical collections, including acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and deselection.
  • Administer and enhance library management systems, databases, and digital repositories.
  • Educate and train staff on information literacy skills, research methodologies, and the use of library resources and tools.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in library science, information management, and research methodologies.
  • Collaborate with IT and research teams to integrate new information technologies and improve access to knowledge assets.

Required Skills

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Demonstrated experience in information organization, cataloging, and metadata management.
  • Proficiency with library management systems (LMS) and digital asset management (DAM) platforms.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to conduct complex searches across various databases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively supporting diverse research teams.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property rights and ethical considerations in information management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a think tank, research institution, or academic library.
  • Knowledge of specific subject areas relevant to RAND’s research, such as national security, economics, or public policy.
  • Experience with data curation and managing research datasets.
  • Proficiency in advanced search tools and research platforms (e.g., Factiva, Westlaw, specialized government databases).
  • Project management experience, particularly related to information system implementation or content migration.
