Job Description
The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University invites applications for a University Music Professor on a tenure-track appointment, with a strong emphasis on research support. We seek an outstanding scholar and educator who will contribute to the intellectual vitality of our music program through innovative research, exceptional teaching, and active participation in the academic community. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a robust research agenda, publish in leading academic journals, secure external funding, and provide mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students. Specific areas of specialization within musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, or music technology are welcome, particularly those that complement existing faculty strengths and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music, appropriate to the candidate's specialization and departmental needs.
- Conduct significant, original research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, or other recognized scholarly outlets.
- Actively seek and secure external research funding through grants and fellowships.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, including thesis supervision.
- Participate in departmental, school, and university service activities, including committee work and curriculum development.
- Contribute to the artistic and intellectual life of The Shepherd School of Music and Rice University.
- Maintain professional development and engagement in relevant academic and artistic communities.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated expertise and scholarly contributions in a recognized field of music research (e.g., musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, music technology).
- Evidence of strong pedagogical skills and a commitment to effective teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
- A record of peer-reviewed publications or a strong pipeline of ongoing research.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students in a diverse academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Musicology, Music Theory, Ethnomusicology, Music Technology, or a related field.
- Prior university-level teaching experience.
- Experience in securing external research grants or fellowships.
- A record of interdisciplinary research or engagement.
- Proficiency in relevant research methodologies or analytical software.
