Job Description

Join the University of California, Riverside for an exciting and immersive Paleontology Intern (Paid) – Summer Vacation Program. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring paleontologists to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment. Interns will work closely with UCR faculty, graduate students, and collection managers on ongoing projects related to fossil preparation, curation, and analysis. This program is designed to provide comprehensive exposure to the practical aspects of paleontology, from the field to the lab, and contribute to significant scientific discoveries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist paleontologists and curatorial staff with the preparation and conservation of fossil specimens, including cleaning, repair, and stabilization.
  • Participate in laboratory tasks such as specimen cataloging, data entry into databases, and basic imaging.
  • Support field excursions as needed, assisting with fossil recovery, excavation techniques, and geological mapping.
  • Conduct preliminary research on assigned fossil groups or geological contexts.
  • Maintain organized records of work performed and contribute to project documentation.
  • Follow all safety protocols and best practices in laboratory and field settings.
  • Present findings or project summaries to fellow interns and mentors at the program's conclusion.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated strong interest in paleontology, geology, or evolutionary biology.
  • Ability to work meticulously with small tools and delicate specimens.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record keeping.
  • Physical ability to participate in field activities, which may include lifting up to 25 lbs, hiking, and working in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate program in paleontology, geology, biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Some prior coursework in earth sciences, biology, or museum studies.
  • Previous experience in a lab setting, museum, or field research is a plus.
  • Familiarity with scientific illustration or photography.
