Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Coatings Chemist to join our research and development team in Palmdale, CA. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing new paint and resin formulations, improving existing products, and providing technical support for our manufacturing operations. This role involves hands-on laboratory work, project management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to bring cutting-edge coating solutions to market. A sign-on bonus is offered to qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test new paint and resin formulations for various applications, including architectural, industrial, and protective coatings.
- Conduct laboratory experiments, including synthesis, characterization, and performance testing of raw materials and finished products.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, making recommendations for product improvements and new product development.
- Troubleshoot formulation and process issues in collaboration with manufacturing and quality control teams.
- Stay current with industry trends, raw material advancements, and competitive products to identify opportunities for innovation.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and specifications for new and existing products.
- Ensure all work adheres to safety guidelines, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical support to sales, marketing, and customer service teams as needed.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of polymer chemistry, surface chemistry, and colloid science.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques for coatings formulation and testing (e.g., rheology, spectroscopy, mechanical testing).
- Experience with various resin chemistries (e.g., acrylics, epoxies, polyurethanes) and coating additives.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in coatings formulation or R&D within the paint and resin industry.
- Familiarity with color matching and pigment dispersion techniques.
- Knowledge of industry standards and test methods (e.g., ASTM, ISO).
- Experience with statistical experimental design (DOE).
