Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Accompanist to join our dynamic team, focusing on providing live musical accompaniment for our dance classes, rehearsals, and theater productions. This role requires a musician with strong sight-reading skills, excellent improvisation abilities, and experience across a variety of musical and dance styles. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative spirit who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment and is passionate about supporting the performing arts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide live musical accompaniment for all levels of dance classes (ballet, modern, jazz, tap) and theatrical rehearsals.
  • Collaborate effectively with choreographers, directors, and instructors to achieve artistic goals and specific musical needs.
  • Adapt musical styles and tempos on the fly to support the movement and dramatic intent of performances.
  • Maintain a diverse and extensive repertoire of musical pieces suitable for various dance and theater disciplines.
  • Ensure punctuality and preparedness for all scheduled classes, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Assist in creating an inspiring and supportive atmosphere for students and performers.
  • Potentially accompany auditions, workshops, and community outreach events as needed.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional proficiency in piano accompaniment with strong technique and musicality.
  • Superior sight-reading skills across various musical genres and complexities.
  • Demonstrated experience accompanying dance classes (ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary) and/or theatrical productions.
  • Ability to improvise and adapt music effectively to meet choreographic and directorial demands.
  • Strong understanding of rhythm, tempo, and dynamics relevant to movement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborative work.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and a positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Performance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as an accompanist in a dance or theater setting.
  • Familiarity with different musical periods and composers relevant to classical and contemporary dance/theater repertoire.
  • Experience with other instruments (e.g., percussion) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of music theory and composition.
