Job Description

We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and experienced Music Copyright Specialist with a strong focus on intellectual property to join our team in Bakersfield, CA. This stable role is crucial for managing and protecting our extensive music catalog’s copyright interests. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of music copyright law, intellectual property rights, and the intricacies of music publishing. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance, processing registrations, managing licensing agreements, and resolving copyright disputes, contributing significantly to the integrity and value of our intellectual property assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end copyright registration process for musical works with relevant PROs (Performing Rights Organizations) and national copyright offices.
  • Conduct thorough intellectual property research to identify ownership, prior registrations, and potential infringements.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various copyright-related agreements, including licensing, synchronization, and administration agreements.
  • Monitor global music markets for potential copyright infringements and initiate appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel on complex copyright disputes, litigation support, and policy development.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date copyright databases and ensure data integrity.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal teams on copyright best practices, intellectual property rights, and compliance.
  • Stay current with changes in national and international copyright law and industry standards.
  • Process royalty statements and track income streams related to copyright usage.
  • Assist in the onboarding of new catalog acquisitions, ensuring seamless transfer and registration of intellectual property rights.

Required Skills

  • Expert knowledge of US and international copyright law pertaining to music.
  • Proven experience with copyright registration processes and intellectual property management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in identifying and resolving complex copyright issues.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research databases and music industry-specific software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Business, Legal Studies, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working at a record label, music publisher, PRO, or entertainment law firm.
  • Familiarity with digital rights management (DRM) technologies.
  • Experience with database management systems and advanced Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
