Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Wildlife Biologist or Ecologist to join our dynamic Environmental Services team in Edson, Alberta. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate professional looking to make a significant impact on wildlife conservation and environmental management, with the added benefit of international sponsorship for qualified candidates. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in planning and executing wildlife field surveys, conducting ecological assessments, and contributing to environmental impact studies for a variety of projects across the region and potentially internationally. This role requires a strong understanding of wildlife ecology, habitat assessment techniques, and regulatory frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute field surveys for various wildlife species (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish) and their habitats.
  • Conduct ecological assessments, including habitat suitability modeling and biodiversity inventories.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret biological data using appropriate statistical and GIS tools.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory permit applications.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project success and compliance.
  • Provide expert advice on wildlife management strategies and mitigation measures.
  • Stay current with environmental legislation, policies, and best practices in wildlife biology and ecology.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and environmental regulations during field operations.

Required Skills

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in wildlife biology or ecological consulting.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and conducting wildlife field surveys, including species identification and data collection.
  • Proficiency with GPS, mapping tools, and data management software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in statistical analysis of ecological data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and Alberta provincial environmental regulations and permitting processes.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) and ability to travel to remote field sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) designation or eligibility for registration in Alberta.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) for spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Experience with impact assessments for linear developments (e.g., pipelines, transmission lines) or large-scale industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous engagement principles.
  • Experience working in diverse ecosystems, particularly boreal forest or mountain environments.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to international project work.
