Job Description
Join UPS, a global leader in logistics, as a Heavy Haul Specialist. This pivotal role involves the safe and efficient transportation of oversized and overweight cargo across various distances. You will be responsible for operating specialized heavy-haul equipment, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations for oversize loads, and maintaining the highest standards of safety. Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-haul trucks and specialized trailers (e.g., multi-axle, lowboy, extendable) for the transport of oversize and overweight loads.
- Plan and execute routes, considering road restrictions, permits, escorts, and safety regulations.
- Secure loads properly according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company standards.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, documenting any defects or maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate electronic logbooks, mileage reports, and all other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with dispatch, clients, and escort personnel.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and safety protocols, especially those pertaining to oversize/overweight transport.
- Perform minor roadside repairs and maintenance as needed to ensure timely deliveries.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) operating heavy-haul equipment for oversize/overweight loads.
- Comprehensive knowledge of DOT, federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to heavy haul and oversize transport.
- Strong understanding of load securement techniques and best practices for various cargo types.
- Ability to read maps, utilize GPS, and plan complex routes efficiently and safely.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Physical ability to perform tasks associated with heavy-haul driving, load securement, and equipment inspection.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in specialized heavy-haul operations or advanced safety training.
- Experience with specific types of heavy equipment such as cranes, excavators, or wind turbine components.
- Familiarity with permit acquisition processes for oversize loads in multiple states.
- Mechanical aptitude for minor equipment troubleshooting and basic repairs.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
