Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and analytical Think Tank Associate to join our Public Policy Research team in Burlington, Vermont. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact research projects that inform policy decisions at local, state, and national levels. The Associate will be involved in all stages of the research lifecycle, from conceptualization and data collection to analysis, report writing, and dissemination. The ideal candidate will possess strong research skills, a keen interest in public policy, and the ability to translate complex information into clear and concise insights for various audiences. This is a hybrid position, requiring a blend of on-site collaboration and remote work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and environmental scans on various policy issues.
  • Assist in designing research methodologies, including survey development and qualitative interview protocols.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data using appropriate statistical and analytical software.
  • Draft sections of research reports, policy briefs, presentations, and other client deliverables.
  • Contribute to the development of proposals and grant applications.
  • Present research findings to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with senior researchers and project managers to ensure project goals are met on time and within budget.
  • Participate in team meetings, policy discussions, and professional development activities.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in research, policy analysis, or a related field (academic experience may count).
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public Policy, Economics, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a think tank, government agency, research institution, or consulting firm.
  • Familiarity with Vermont-specific or New England regional policy issues (e.g., renewable energy, rural development, healthcare access).
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS) or qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo).
  • Experience with grant writing or proposal development.
