Job Description
The City of Pasco Public Works Department is seeking dedicated and experienced Snow Plow Operators for the upcoming winter season. This is a vital temporary role responsible for maintaining safe and clear roadways during snow and ice events. Operators will be on call for emergency response, working flexible hours to ensure critical infrastructure remains accessible. You will operate heavy equipment, including snow plows and sand/salt spreaders, performing duties safely and efficiently under varying weather conditions. This position offers emergency pay for critical incident response.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate snow plows, sanders, and other heavy equipment to clear snow and ice from municipal roadways, parking lots, and public areas.
- Respond to emergency call-outs for snow and ice removal, often working extended and irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment; perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Monitor weather conditions and road reports to anticipate and respond to snow and ice accumulation.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and traffic laws while operating equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and materials applied.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational status and any issues encountered.
- Assist with other public works duties as directed, which may include general labor or equipment operation during non-snow events.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
- Proven experience operating heavy equipment, including snow plows and spreaders.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse weather conditions.
- Strong understanding of road safety procedures and traffic laws.
- Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high-pressure environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 2 years of professional snow plowing or heavy equipment operation experience.
- Knowledge of Pasco road network.
- Experience with various types of de-icing materials and application techniques.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
