Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Remote FOIA Analyst to join our dedicated team. This position is crucial for our work in promoting government transparency and accountability. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, conducting legal research, analyzing government documents, and assisting in our broader advocacy efforts. This is a 100% remote position, offering the flexibility to work from your home office while collaborating with a passionate team across the nation.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and process a high volume of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and equivalent state public records requests from submission to closure.
- Conduct thorough legal and factual research related to FOIA exemptions, case law, and agency practices.
- Review and analyze responsive documents for privilege, confidentiality, and relevance to the request.
- Communicate effectively with government agencies, legal counsel, and internal stakeholders regarding request status and challenges.
- Draft correspondence, appeals, and litigation support documents related to FOIA requests.
- Maintain organized records and tracking systems for all requests and communications.
- Collaborate with legal and policy teams to identify strategic opportunities for public records requests to support advocacy campaigns.
- Stay abreast of developments in FOIA law, related statutes, and agency regulations.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and/or state public records laws.
- Strong legal research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with legal research databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw) and office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Pre-Law, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Paralegal certificate or equivalent experience in a legal or advocacy setting.
- Experience with electronic discovery platforms or document review software.
- Prior experience working with government agencies or non-profit organizations focused on transparency.
