Job Description

As a Paleontology Crew Chief, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of paleontological field projects. This is a critical leadership role that requires strong organizational skills, expert knowledge of paleontological methods, and the ability to mentor and manage field crews. You will ensure project objectives are met on time and within budget, all while upholding the highest standards of safety and scientific rigor. This position is a full-time, on-site role primarily involving fieldwork and some office-based reporting within the New Port Richey, FL area and surrounding regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise paleontological field crews, ensuring efficient and safe operations.
  • Conduct paleontological surveys, monitoring, and excavation in various geological contexts.
  • Implement fieldwork protocols, including fossil recovery, documentation, and preliminary identification.
  • Manage project logistics, including equipment, supplies, and vehicle coordination.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations and permits.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and other project documentation.
  • Oversee data collection, including GPS mapping and stratigraphic profiling.
  • Prepare preliminary field reports and contribute to comprehensive project reports.
  • Train and mentor junior staff and field technicians.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years (48 months) of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing field crews.
  • Extensive knowledge of vertebrate and/or invertebrate paleontology, fossil identification, and geological principles.
  • Proficiency in field excavation techniques, documentation methods, and data collection.
  • Ability to interpret geological maps and stratigraphic columns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various outdoor environments and weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and data management.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, Florida Statutes).
  • Knowledge of microvertebrate screenwashing and bulk sample processing.
