Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paleontological Database Administrator to join our specialized research support team in Orlando. This high-level IT role is critical for managing, maintaining, and optimizing our extensive paleontological datasets, ensuring their integrity, accessibility, and security. You will be instrumental in designing and implementing robust database solutions that support cutting-edge research in paleontology, working closely with scientific teams to understand their data needs and translate them into efficient database architectures. Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain complex relational and non-relational databases for paleontological data.
- Ensure database security, integrity, and availability through robust backup, recovery, and access control strategies.
- Monitor database performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement optimization techniques (indexing, query tuning, schema refactoring).
- Collaborate with paleontologists and researchers to define data requirements, develop data models, and integrate new datasets.
- Manage data migration, transformation, and loading processes from various sources.
- Develop and maintain documentation for database structures, processes, and standards.
- Provide expert technical support and guidance to research staff on database usage and best practices.
- Stay abreast of new database technologies and best practices, recommending and implementing improvements.
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and roles within the database environment.
- Implement and maintain data archiving and retention policies.
Required Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Database Administrator or similar high-level IT role.
- Expertise in SQL and experience with major relational database management systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle).
- Strong understanding of database design, data modeling, and normalization principles.
- Proficiency in database backup, recovery, and replication strategies.
- Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems and scripting (Bash, Python).
- Familiarity with data security best practices and compliance.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) or graph databases.
- Familiarity with paleontological data standards, GIS data, or other scientific data management principles.
- Experience with cloud database services (e.g., IBM Cloud Databases, AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database).
- Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Understanding of data visualization tools and techniques.
