Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Forensic Analyst to join our State Crime Lab in Lawrence, Kansas. This critical role involves overseeing complex forensic analyses, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all laboratory results. The successful candidate will specialize in a particular area of forensic science (e.g., DNA, Ballistics, Toxicology, Digital Forensics) while also possessing a broad understanding of various forensic disciplines. This position demands meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical capabilities, and excellent communication skills to articulate findings in reports and expert testimony. You will play a pivotal role in criminal investigations, providing crucial evidence that directly impacts public safety and justice within the State of Kansas. This is an on-site position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform advanced forensic analysis on a wide range of evidence types, adhering to established protocols and quality standards.
  • Provide expert interpretation of analytical results and prepare comprehensive, defensible laboratory reports.
  • Serve as an expert witness in court, providing clear and concise testimony regarding forensic findings and methodologies.
  • Oversee and mentor junior forensic analysts, providing guidance on complex cases, training, and professional development.
  • Develop and validate new analytical methods and procedures, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Manage case assignments, workflow, and resource allocation within a specific forensic discipline.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs, including internal audits and proficiency testing.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  • Collaborate effectively with law enforcement agencies, legal professionals, and other stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in forensic science through continuous education and professional development.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 5 years (60 months) of hands-on experience as a Forensic Analyst in a accredited crime laboratory.
  • Proven expertise in at least one major forensic discipline (e.g., DNA analysis, trace evidence, toxicology, firearms, digital forensics).
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex analytical data and write clear, concise technical reports.
  • Experience providing expert witness testimony in court.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ASCLD/LAB, ISO 17025).
  • Proficiency with relevant laboratory instrumentation and software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to forensic integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in a forensic or scientific discipline.
  • Certification by a nationally recognized forensic board (e.g., ABC, ABFT, ANAB).
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a forensic laboratory.
  • Familiarity with Kansas state statutes and legal procedures related to evidence handling and expert testimony.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software.
