Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Garden Center Hand to join our team. This role is crucial for maintaining the health and beauty of our plant inventory and providing outstanding customer service. You will be the first point of contact for many customers, guiding them through our selection, offering expert advice, and ensuring they have a positive and successful gardening experience. A strong understanding of various plant types, their care requirements, and common pests/diseases is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist customers with plant selection, providing accurate information and care instructions.
- Water, fertilize, and prune plants as needed to ensure optimal health and appearance.
- Monitor plants for signs of pests or diseases and apply appropriate treatments.
- Receive, unload, and merchandise new plant shipments.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing display area in the garden center.
- Operate cash register and process transactions accurately.
- Provide general assistance with garden center operations, including inventory and stocking.
- Educate customers on proper planting techniques and soil amendments.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of plants, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items (up to 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
- Basic computer proficiency for point-of-sale systems.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a garden center, nursery, or similar retail environment.
- Horticulture degree or certification.
- Experience with integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
- Familiarity with local climate and plant hardiness zones in Colorado.
