Job Description

Join the City of Lubbock Fire Department as a Fire Truck Driver Trainee, an entry-level position designed to train and develop future fire apparatus operators. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all required training programs and certifications for fire apparatus operation.
  • Learn to safely operate and maneuver various fire apparatus, including pumpers, ladder trucks, and other specialized vehicles, under supervision.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned fire apparatus, reporting any mechanical issues or deficiencies.
  • Assist with the maintenance, cleaning, and basic upkeep of fire vehicles and equipment.
  • Familiarize yourself with the streets, water main locations, and emergency response routes within the City of Lubbock.
  • Respond to emergency calls, including fires, medical emergencies, and other public safety incidents, as part of a team.
  • Operate pumps, hoses, ladders, and other firefighting equipment as directed by a senior officer.
  • Adhere strictly to all departmental policies, safety regulations, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain physical fitness standards required for the role.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow firefighters and emergency personnel.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within a specified timeframe after hire.
  • Demonstrated physical fitness and ability to pass a rigorous physical agility test.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and learn quickly.
  • Commitment to public safety and community service.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, high-pressure environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or in another emergency services capacity.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics or maintenance.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Residency within the City of Lubbock or surrounding areas.
